As always, I want to thank each of you who have supported us through the years. It is an absolute joy to develop themes for the RapidWeaver community.

What's Been Going On At RWT?

Since last August (2008) things have been unbelievably busy ... incredibly busy ... so busy that at times it is hard to keep things in somewhat of an order. We have been working on new themes, updates to old themes, plugins, applications, an occasional supportcast, design work, and a number of things that I can't talk about yet. However, I want to let you know about some of the things we are working on.

Headliner 3 Theme Re-Write
Since it's introduction nearly two years ago the Headliner 3 theme has been one of the top sellers of the RWT theme library. The reason for this is because it allow you to do what only a couple of RapidWeaver themes will do and that is to allow for split or dual sidebars. We originally created this theme using some crafty re-direction of the "h3, 4, 5, and 6" tags. While this method worked just fine it is not the optimum way to achieve this effect but because of the limitation of RapidWeaver this was the only way that made sense to us.

However, late last year (2008) an awesome new feature was created by a handful of 3rd party theme developers (myself included) that would allow the end user to enter content into areas that were not before possible. This new feature was dubbed "Extra Content".
The Headliner 3 theme is in the process of being re-written to make use of "Extra Content" instead of all those "H tags". I will admit that we have been a slow in getting this out to everyone but there is quite a lot of the theme that we have had to trash and re-write. It is still an active project and shaping up nicely.

New Site Design
If you have been following the RWT website over the last several years you know that we like to change site designs every few months. Well, its that time again ... we will soon be unveiling a brand new site design.

New Themes
We do have 2 brand new themes that will be made available within a couple of weeks.

Plugins
There is an update to the Partitions plugin in the works. I don't want to reveal to much about what is in this update we are wanting to create a page style (plugin) that will become your default page style for RapidWeaver. (Hint: It does have something to do with Extra Content)

Application Develoment
Most of you know that we are also the developers of Webify (http://www.mudbugsoftware.com). We are working on what needs to be corrected and added or changed for a Webify 2 release, although we do not have any dates set as of yet.

There is another application that is in early development ... by that I mean, still in my head .... that I am looking to get started by the end of the summer.

Well, there you have it .... a little sneak peak of some of the things going on at RWT these days.

Mello Is Getting Oh So Close

We have been working through the night the last couple of nights trying to finish out the Mello theme. I have a target date set for next Tuesday (2/3/09) as a release day.

New Theme To Be Announced Soon

I will admit that we have been spending a lot of time lately on RapidWeaver plugins, but I want to assure you that we have not forgotten how to code themes. As a matter of fact I will be releasing a brand new theme for RapidWeaver in a matter of days.

You should keep your eyes peeled for "Mello" ...

Say Hello To "Buzz"

Several months ago I began building a theme for RapidWeaver but was never able to release it to the public simply because it needed to offer the user more ways to add content that were presently available to RapidWeaver. The theme just sort of sat there in my theme drawer and I had wondered if I would ever be able to finish it out. Then, within a few days time we, along with some help from some other developers (seyDesign and (((Bonsai Studio))) ) were able to develop a friendly and standards compliant way of adding additional content to RapidWeaver themes. I was so buzzed about this progress that I pulled out that lonely old theme and finished it off in a couple of days.
I decided "
Buzz
" would be an appropriate name for such a theme.
The
Buzz
theme is a 3 column masterpiece ... as you can tell we are very proud of this theme and very excited of the possibilities of how this theme will be used.
It makes use of
4
ExtraContent containers that you can use to insert text or any other content into. The extra containers are located:
  • in the header area underneath the site title and slogan
  • underneath the Navigation in sidebar number 1
  • underneath the content area of the page and above the footer area (this is especially handy in pages like Kwix and the Contact Form)
  • and lastly in the footer area

Are You Ready For "Extra Content"

I believe that we have entered into a new era of theme development for RapidWeaver. Over the last few years the theme development community has done a pretty good job of pushing the boundaries of a RapidWeaver theme just about as far as they could possibly go, but the end users wanted more. More places to hold content, more places for images, more places for that html, more, more, more.
So a few of us developers began talking about how we could realistically offer users "more" in a stylish, standards compliant way. After a few days of discussions and testing we finally settled on using the power of the Snippet and a little bit of jQuery "no conflict". We chose to call this new feature "ExtraContent"

Now for the first time in RW history users will have the ability to add content to areas of themes that have not yet been possible. I am certain that more developers will pick up on this as time goes by, but for now there are only a few themes that offer this freedom. (actually, as of today there are only 3).

In case you are wondering ... the other developers are Adam Merrifield from seyDesign and Giuseppe Caruso from (((Bonsai Studio))).

You can get a look at the "ExtraContent" containers in action by viewing this video that I created demonstrating how it all works.
